A man named James Predergast first realized the potential for the region along the upper portion of Chautauqua Lake during a visit in 1806. He had later returned in 1811 and started to clear a bit of land to begin developing a family settlement. By the end of 1811, he had constructed the first sawmill and dam in the area, now known as the BPU Light Plant Facility. 

After about two years of Predergast’s stake in the region, other settlers started to come into the new area to take advantage of all available opportunities. A blacksmith shop began operating in 1812, which was followed by a smaller wood furniture business founded by Phineas Palmiter. He became known for being a world-renowned furniture builder that catapulted Jamestown within the industry.

While the land was being cleared for small industrial and agricultural purposes, the forests were often used as money-makers. Because hardwood remained too expensive for transportation and too heavy to float the streams, it got burned instead. As this happened, the ash leached, obtaining lye and “pearl ash” – this was an essential component for the manufacturing of glass products. Once the mid-1820s arrived, Jamestown had become one of the largest hubs in North America for pearl ash production. Due to this distinction, Jamestown, New York, then became known by the name “The Pearl City.”

The Tinkham Brothers established a furniture business during 1900, which ran alongside the formation of Hall Textile Corporation and the publishing of the Furniture Index. Jamestown purchased a water system in 1903 around the same time that J.P. Danielson Tool, Co. was established. The excavation for Jamestown General Hospital began in 1910, which is a structure still standing today.
