Begin Water Restoration in Jamestown Commercial Buildings to Avoid Secondary Damage

Initial water leaks in Jamestown commercial buildings are often limited to the immediate area of the water leak. A call to water restoration companies such as SERVPRO, who respond in less than four hours, can control the spread of water and the subsequent secondary damage to contents and flooring materials.

SERVPRO provides water restoration services to Jamestown commercial landlords, building owners, and tenants. Leaks from burst plumbing can quickly inundate large spaces. If not removed in less than twenty-four hours, water seeping into porous materials, such as drywall, carpet, and paper products, can cause extensive secondary damage, including mold infestations.

  • Water removal, extraction, and drying of contents and structure.

Combating Water Damage from HVAC on Jamestown Premises

There are many possible causes of water damage in commercial buildings, one being an improperly maintained HVAC unit. The HVAC system is an invaluable part of any retail space as it controls the quality and temperature of the air in buildings. However, a damaged HVAC system can lead to extensive water damage over time. Common causes of HVAC moisture damage include frozen evaporator coils, clogged drains, and improperly connected pipes.

Rapid water restoration in Jamestown businesses premises is vital to minimize the loss. If the cleanup process does not start immediately, water begins to evaporate. The air absorbs the evaporated water redistributing the moisture to hygroscopic materials such as ceiling tiles and drywall. The result is secondary damage that can intensely increase the claims from the insurer. SERVPRO understands you want to stay open and works around your schedule, helping you keep your downtime to a minimum.

Some examples of secondary damage include:

  • Mold infestation
  • Hardwood floors begin to buckle
  • Sheetrock and plaster sag and crack
  • Vinyl loosens from the floor

Drying Structural Components After Moisture Damage

You can expect varying damage depending on where the unit is located. Ground-floor systems ruin flooring materials, carpets, and drywall, while second-story units can leak, causing ceiling damage. It can lead to replacing flooring and drywall, an expensive prospect that SERVPRO professionals strive to prevent.

Proper restoration steps:

  • Extract
  • Remove
  • Evaporate and dehumidify
  • Disinfect

We use commercial-grade pumps and vacuums to extract water from the floor, carpet, and furniture. Wood framing, drywall, and subfloors become saturated with moisture and should be dried quickly to minimize mold growth. SERVPRO professionals typically use industrial air movers, which are much more powerful, speeding up the evaporation process. However, evaporation increases humidity levels, so it is vital to remove air moisture. For such, our crews set up industrial dehumidifiers.

With trained and certified professionals, SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean provides timely and efficient water restoration to business owners. Call us at (716) 338-4901 to quickly dry out your premises. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Fortunately, an experienced firm like SERVPRO can perform commercial fire restoration in your Jamestown convenience store. • Cleanup
  • Reconstruction

Assessment and Inspection

We can assess and inspect the building. Our SERVPRO restorers can test all surfaces showing evidence of smoke residues. Water Extraction and Drying

Water damage resulting from the firefighting efforts is the other issue you must handle. We can use pumps to remove all excess water from your business premises. We can then dry the building using axial air movers and desiccant dehumidifiers

Cleanup

Soot is corrosive and can cause etching and tarnishing of the affected materials and objects. The cleanup process involves removing the ruined items and cleaning affected surfaces like floors, ceilings, and walls to eliminate soot.

How to Handle Commercial Flood Damage in a Jamestown University

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

Handshake Agreement In Commercial Building We make it “Like it never even happened.” We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Fix Commercial Flood Damage in a Jamestown University With SERVPRO’S Expertise

Flooding is one of the disaster scenarios that can occur in a university. Universities consist of various kinds of buildings used for different purposes. Therefore, the dangers of flood damage in such an institution are varied.

The type of damage in an office or library could differ from that in lecture halls or the gym. That’s why you need SERVPRO’s services because we can perform commercial flood damage repair in the Jamestown institution properly regardless of its size or scope.

Serious health risks can be present since flood water often contains contaminants like pesticides, bacteria, and sewage. Our SERVPRO team can help you to return the learning institution to normal by taking the following measures:

Extracting Standing Floodwater

Our technicians can use truck-mounted extractors to remove the floodwater. These extractors are stable for large buildings or commercial properties because they provide a more powerful vacuum than portable extractors. They run off the work vehicle’s fuel, meaning that they are suitable when flooding has cut off electrical power.

Drying Wet Materials and Surfaces

Walls could trap moisture that may lead to microbial issues. SERVPRO has equipment effective for drying moisture trapped inside enclosed areas. For instance, we can use air movers to introduce airflow at the surface level, replacing the highly saturated air with drier air to improve evaporation. We can also position dehumidifiers to deliver dry, warm air in the affected areas.

Disinfection

We can apply EPA-registered broad-spectrum disinfectants like Microban, Benefect, and Sporicidin on affected surfaces to kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Removing Odors

The odors that come with flooding can linger long after restorers have completed the repairs. Our SERVPRO team can use ultra-low volume (ULV) foggers to dispense solvent-based and water-based deodorizers into the affected buildings. The foggers generate tiny particles that penetrate most areas where odor particles hide.

SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean is ready to assist you in tackling commercial flood damage. Call us any time at (716) 338-4901.

What Extractors Are Best for Commercial Water Damage Cleanup in Jamestown?

Jamestown SERVPRO Water Damage Cleanup Techs Preserve Commercial Facilities After Disaster

Water damage can impact a business when property owners least expect it. Many of these unfortunate disasters happen off the clock. A 1/8" leak in a pipe can expel as much as 250 gallons of water in a month.

Commercial water damage cleanup services from Jamestown SERVPRO professionals can stop further damage and return business facilities to a pre-disaster state. Crew members' access to a plethora of industrial-grade equipment, including portable and truck-mounted extractors, maximizes flexibility and availability for restoration tasks for commercial property owners.

Benefits of Truck Extractors Versus Portable Extractors for Commercial Water Cleanup

While both types of extractors possess pros and cons for various water damage situations, and some cases may call for both types of extraction units, SERVPRO considers a variety of factors when deciding on a primary extraction method.

  • Truck-mounted units can hold dozens of gallons more wastewater than their portable counterparts. They can heat up to 220 degrees Fahrenheit for sanitation purposes. However, the mounting style limits mobility to an extent. Truck extractors also tend to clean carpet more quickly than a portable unit. They also have stronger suction capabilities.
  • Portable units, while packing less power, possess a great deal more flexibility than a truck mount. While made for use at long distances, truck extractor hoses start losing suction power at approximately 150 feet, which can prove challenging for buildings with water damage on higher floors. Portable extractors also require less accommodation from a business than a truck mount. These units also allow businesses with sensitive materials on sites, such as banks or law offices, to keep their doors securely closed, which is not feasible with a truck extractor.

SERVPRO Uses Safe and Effective Chemical Decontamination Agents during Flood Restoration in Jamestown

Microbes such as bacteria and fungi are commonly found in floodwater. SERVPRO experts use chemical agents called antimicrobials during the water cleanup of your Jamestown property. Some of the agents we typically use are-

  • Phenolics: A broad-spectrum antimicrobial effect on bacteria, fungi, and even viruses commonly used during flood restoration. Many synthetic phenolics also have odor-countering properties as well.
  • Quaternary Compounds (Quats): Most common type of antimicrobial used during water damage remediation. Quats are also broad-spectrum and have a pleasant smell. These compounds don't lose their activity with time in contrast to phenolics.
  • Chlorines: Strong oxidizing agents that kill a wide variety of microbes. Chlorines, however, have a strong odor and are hence used rarely.
  • Botanicals: Antimicrobial agents of natural origin containing thyme oil, thymol, or citric acid. As these are natural compounds and not synthetic, they are eco-friendly.

Commercial Mold Remediation in Jamestown Gets Professional Help from SERVPRO

One of the best-known people to hail from Jamestown was the actress Lucille Ball, born in 1911. The family moved to Michigan and New Jersey as her father got transferred with his company. However, when Lucy was three years old, her father died of typhoid fever at age 27, and her mother returned with Lucy and her brother to Jamestown to be near family.

Lucy took acting lessons at the same drama school attended by Bette Davis and later found minor success as a minor character in a string of movies. Her big break came when she won a role in the musical film, ‘Too Many Girls,’ where she also met the man who would become her future husband, Desi Arnaz, who played one of her character's bodyguards in the movie. In 1948, Lucy was asked to develop a ditzy housewife character she portrayed on a radio show into a television show. She came up with her most famous show, ‘I Love Lucy.’ She made a difference throughout her career, notably:

  • Ball became the first woman to run a production company in 1960
  • She overruled the board and greenlighted the filming of a proposed series, ‘Star Trek’
  • ‘I Love Lucy' was the first TV show to be shot on 35 mm film in front of a studio audience

When Lucy passed away in 1989, she was cremated and initially buried in the Hollywood Hills cemetery. In 2002, her children had her urn moved to the family plot in Jamestown by her mother and grandmother.

Visiting the Lucy and Desi Museum in Jamestown

The "first couple of comedy" has its dedicated museum in Jamestown. The attraction is open seven days a week and honors Lucy and Desi's legacy behind with their original comedy. There are replicas of sets from the ‘I Love Lucy’ show, Ball's various awards, along with costumes worn by both Lucy and Desi. The museum also features rare memorabilia and much more.

Lucy gets remembered on her birthday every year in Jamestown with a gathering of fans. On  August 6, 2011, which would have been Lucy's 100th birthday, nearly 1000 Lucille Ball lookalikes gathered to set a Guinness World Record for the most lookalikes in one place at a single time.

SERVPRO vehicles parked in plaza If you need a company you can trust, call SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean today for any of your water or fire damage remediation needs.

SERVPRO can mitigate fire damage in commercial facilities

If your workshop has smoke damage from a minor fire, you may think all you need is a quick cleanup. If the walls are made from sheetrock, wiping them down, and repainting can seem the easiest way to go and inexpensive. This can cause more problems.

Smoke can cause extensive damage, and you should use professional fire damage services in Olean. When our team arrives, we begin right away:

  • Inspect the walls and ceilings
  • Check the type of smoke residues present
  • Clean impacted areas
  • Deodorize the facility
  • Repair and restore needed areas and elements

Sealants May Be Needed

In specific incidences, particulates can become embedded into the sheetrock. When that happens, basic cleaning may not be enough. In this case, our technicians can use sealants. Sealants encapsulate the foul odors with a method that covers the smells. Once that is done, the sheetrock is ready to be primed and painted.

What are the Necessary Steps to Restore the Damage Following a Grease Fire in a Restaurant?

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

Empty restaurant, ready for diners Don't let a kitchen fire close your restaurant. Call SERVPRO!

Protein Residue can be Challenging to Remove. Calling a Team of Professional Fire Restoration Technicians Makes the Work More Efficient

It is not unusual for a Jamestown restaurant kitchen to catch on fire. With food always on the burners and ovens, it is almost a matter of time before an accident occurs, and a grease fire erupts. Regardless of the staff's quick response with a fire extinguisher or the rapid arrival of firefighters, the odds are that soot and smoke travel fast throughout the kitchen and into the main dining area. Before you set up to clean the residue on your own, let a reputable crew of fire restoration technicians tailor a plan for your needs.

Restaurant owners in Jamestown can leave fire damage restoration to our SERVPRO team. We understand that reopening and resuming normal operations is essential to your livelihood and work diligently to reduce the time you remain closed to your patrons. Whenever possible, our crew isolates the affected area and prevents damage in other restaurant areas. We coordinate with authorities and guidelines specific to the restaurant industry, so your eatery is running as soon as possible.

What makes a protein fire hard to clean up?

Protein such as meat and poultry leave a distinguished type of residue behind. The thick and yellowish stain is tough to remove, as is the strong odor lingering in the air. When our SERVPRO fire restoration crew arrives, we consider the chemical composition of whatever burned and the nature of the cleaning surfaces.

Fixtures in your restaurant made of natural elements such as wood require a different treatment than those made of vinyl, for example. Our extensive training prepares us to care for both. The following steps are essential to our success in restoring your place:

  • Pre-treatment of affected areas to prevent damage caused by abrasive cleaners
  • HEPA vacuuming and sponge drying to loosed soot and make it easier to remove
  • Use of odor removal techniques such as air scrubbers and thermal foggers

At SERVPRO of Jamestown/Olean, we take a comprehensive approach to fire restoration. When you call us at (716) 338-4901, you can count on us addressing each aspect of fire damage in our work. Like you, we want your restaurant to feel, “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO Commercial Water Damage Restoration Technicians in Jamestown Perform Regular Monitoring of Drying Process to Ensure Minimum Business Interruption.

What is monitoring during the restoration process?

No two water emergencies are the same. For Jamestown businesses, it is not uncommon to have unique architecture or open-plan spaces. These larger spaces can counteract conventional drying methods and may require a tailored approach. Once demolition, water extraction, and cleaning processes are complete, SERVPRO technicians can set up drying equipment in the property. Drying out residual moisture takes significantly longer than pumping or extracting. However, it is essential to ensure that your business premises do not suffer secondary issues like mold growth. Technicians frequently monitor the drying process to optimize drying conditions on your premises.

What are the principles of dry monitoring?

- Inspect, observe and document areas of the property

- Consider and apply potential changes by repositioning equipment

- Adjust the drying system by bringing in or removing equipment

What equipment is used for monitoring?

Monitoring equipment for commercial water damage restoration in your Jamestown business relies on specific detection devices. This equipment may include hygrometers, sensors, or moisture meters. Usually, our technicians combine these readings with initial impressions and experience. Checking that dehumidifiers are pulling enough moisture out of the air is one example of monitoring. If the results could be improved, we could deploy more dehumidifiers or remove air-movers from the environment to speed up drying times. Repositioning equipment may also be sufficient to dry walls or other areas.

When is the restoration complete?

- Once drying equipment is removed from the property

- After a Crew chief conducts a final walkthrough with you to explain work done

- When you the premises manager sign a certificate of satisfaction

Re-opening your business quickly and minimizing your potential loss of revenue depends upon efficient drying methods. Contact SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean at (716) 338-4901.

How Can I Prevent Damage to the Metal Framing Inside My Warehouse After a Water Leak?

7/9/2020 (Permalink)

warehouse We know the steps to get your Jamestown Warehouse back from water damage. Give us a call today at (716) 338-4901.

For Commercial Water Damage Repair in Your Jamestown Warehouse Call SERVPRO

If a pipe breaks on the upper level of your warehouse in Jamestown, H2O could pour out and drench your building from the source of the leak down to lower levels of the building. It is also possible that moisture will find its way inside your wall cavities.

How can you tell if water got inside my warehouse's walls?

Initial Inspection- Before our SERVPRO technicians begin conducting commercial water damage repair inside your Jamestown warehouse, we inspect your entire building to calculate how severe the problems are and where the moisture traveled. Even though metal framing is uncommon in residential structures, commercial buildings often have light gauge steel pieces for the studs, tracks, and headers. The metal framing structures have bottom sill plates that make up the wall, window, and door headers. These sill plates are either "C" or "U" shaped channels that can hold water if the moisture comes down from above. We can assess whether or not there is water sitting on the plates by removing the baseboard, window, or door trim and drilling a hole in the drywall.

Restorability- The metal framework is very sturdy and resilient to moisture for the most part. The metal framing can be restored even if the source of your water leak was a sink or sewer line containing contaminated water. If the water is classified as a category two or three, meaning that it could be contaminated, then the metal frame pieces can be cleaned and decontaminated. However, if moisture stays sitting on top of any of your bottom sill plates, then mold could grow on the backside of your drywall, or the metal could rust over time.

Extraction- If standing water is present inside your wall cavities, then we can attach 3/8" tubing to an extractor to pull out the moisture.

If you ever need help drying out your wall cavities after suffering from a leak in your warehouse, call SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean at (716) 338-4901 24/7.

What’s the Fastest Way to Dry Out a Commercial Building?

6/17/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO technicians with drying equipment We understand the need for rapid response and restoration to minimize the loss of your business property. Call us right away we are available 24/7.

When water damage affects your Jamestown municipal building, our SERVPRO team can help with efficient extraction and drying solutions.

With the higher volume of traffic that you can expect in the municipal buildings of Jamestown, it is vital to resolve pressing disasters that compromise functionality as soon as possible. Water losses are among the most common threats that could occur to these structures, as multiple sources could lead to these damaging effects. From a burst service line to a broken fire suppression system, widespread water damage can happen quickly when pooling liquid spreads to adjacent rooms and areas.

No matter how severe water damage in Jamestown structures might be, a fast response is always desirable. Our team of technicians and contractors can work together to meet the most pressing needs of the building when we first arrive and establish containment of the damaged areas. Identifying the fastest methods of drying out the structure occurs during the initial inspection and assessment of the property by our SERVPRO project manager, crew chief, and the board responsible for the upkeep of the municipal building.

How Can Job Scoping Help with Efficient Restoration?

An evaluation of the property before our mitigation services begin can be a wise decision. This preliminary look at the damaged areas of the structure ensures that all parties involved are aware of the condition of the building and the necessary actions to return it to the preloss state. This assessment dictates the required equipment, the personnel needed, and even the work from our team of licensed contractors. The advantages of job scoping include learning the following:

  • Extent of Loss – It is the primary focus of this job scoping to identify the current condition of the building and what areas of the structure are still usable and can get protected from migrating effects.
  • Damaged Contents – Furniture, equipment, and documents can all be in the path of moving water and become irreparably damaged without direct intervention by our SERVPRO professionals. Our team assesses affected contents on an item-by-item basis.
  • Pre-Existing Conditions – Knowing what faults existed in the structure before the water loss can help to center our technicians on the restoration actions needed to address only the issues generated by the current water emergency.
  • Path of Migrating Water – Using sophisticated detection devices in the inspection, we can discover not only where the damage originated, but also its path and concentration through the rest of the building. With marble and stone flooring, water can move quickly in search of sensitive materials that can absorb it, such as carpeting in office spaces and drywall.

What Tools Make for Efficient Extraction?

Because there are several areas of the municipal building where absorption might not occur immediately, extraction can play a vital role in the restoration and recovery of the structure. Multiple water removal units can work in these settings, and much of this choice depends on the severity of the pooling and where in the building the water exists. Some of the options for extraction include:

  • Wet Vacuums
  • Submersible Pumps
  • Truck-Mount Pumps

How Can I Dry the Building Quickly After Water Removal?

There is an immense pressure as a city structure to immediately resolve water damage concerns and get the facility back to top form. Through containment strategies and around-the-clock restoration techniques, our SERVPRO professionals can help to get back to running at full capacity. When it comes to drying the structure or specific contents, several tools are ideal for this:

  • Axial Air Movers – Air movers are the foundational tool in drying out damaged materials and environments. Unlike the centrifugal models that our team can use, axial air movers work to reduce the moisture content in a broad area rather than targeting a specific portion of material.
  • Desiccant Dehumidifiers – Several dehumidifiers can help regulate humidity levels and moisture content in the environment where drying occurs. Our trailered desiccant unit allows for much more substantial production output, exhausting heated, dry air into multiple points while steadily drawing out moisture from the building.
  • Freeze Drying – Hard copies of records and documents can be found in most of the city building offices, making water loss incidents even more damaging when these documents become involved. With our freeze-drying technology, we can restore these items to their original condition on-site.

There are multiple steps involved in getting your municipal building up and running again after a water loss incident. Our SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean team can help with experienced technicians and efficient equipment. Give us a call anytime at (716) 338-4901.

SERVPRO removes debris, and broken windows, doors or wall punctures to be boarded up to protect the building from further damage.

Water extraction units are brought in to remove standing water. These units range from truck-mounted pumps to weighted water extractors and portable extractors to reach hard to get at areas. Air movers and dehumidifiers are brought in as needed to completely dry the space, including carpeting, fabrics, and walls.

Inspection Equipment

SERVPRO also uses a variety of inspection devices to make sure there are no spots left with water or high moisture levels that can lead to structural damage or mold growth. These devices include moisture sensors, thermal imaging cameras, moisture meters, and thermos-hygrometers. Each device has a specific application and is called upon by our technical experts to make sure no moisture hot spots are remaining.

Flood cuts in walls may be required to root out water or moisture hot spots identified by these devices. Removing the moisture now eliminates future issues such as mold growth, which can impact the health of your employees and clients.

We Discuss Remediation Steps Needed To Clean Up Flood Damage In Your Jamestown Store

Remediation Steps Needed To Clean Up Commercial Flood Damage In A Jamestown Area Retail Store

Intense storms during the fall can cause a deluge of rain and flooding to overtake retail stores and shops in Jamestown. We consider the water that comes inside to be Category 3, which is the worst level of contamination possible. Specific remediation steps must take place for your store to re-open after this kind of disaster.

One of the initial steps we take when remediating a retail setting in Jamestown of storm or flood damage involves putting safety precautions into place. Employees of SERVPRO and those of our customers have a right to safe working conditions. During Category 3 remediation, wear personal protective equipment (PPE) that makes the interior setting less hazardous. Other safety precautions involving electrical wiring, gas lines, and debris are crucial to our safety.

Decreasing the ability of cross-contamination from happening is another vital aspect of protecting SERVPRO specialists as they perform remediation services. We address the issue of contamination with both disinfection methods and containment chambers. The first makes picking up and transferring contaminants from surfaces less likely to happen. Chambers use negative air pressure to help contain any dislodged contaminants, as these can rest deeper inside materials.

Cleaning up and carrying out the restoration process starts with removing remaining water. When pumping water out of basements, we do so in stages. This allows us to check for changes to your foundation that might occur if the ground outside is overly saturated and places too much pressure on the foundation's walls.

We actively work on reducing the humidity in the air, as this is a crucial part of drying the structure. As long as water vapor stays above normal levels, the structure can develop problems with secondary water damage. As long as contaminants remain in the area, we need to combine dehumidification efforts and negative pressure containment. However, until the level of contaminants dips down to normal, we refrain from using air movers because we want to avoid transferring any microbes from one area to another.

We also bag up debris from both the flood and also any damaged materials. This can require cutting and pulling sections of materials away from walls. We also collect furnishings and any salvageable inventory for cleaning and restoration at our facility. In some buildings, enclosed spaces can keep floodwater trapped. Our building services crew works with us in opening these areas up in a manner that makes rebuilding them possible.

Just before finishing, we clean the area with a disinfectant and remove any bagged waste for disposal. We decontaminate our PPE and equipment. Then we do a final check to ensure we have not missed anything.

Commercial Flood Damage Olean – CloudBurst Floods Office

8/18/2019 (Permalink)

Don’t let flood damage stop your day at the office in Olean, let us help.

SERVPRO will have you back to work in your Olean office in no time.

Recently a localized storm blew through the area and flooded one of our client's offices. He mentioned that it felt like a cloud burst with so much water falling. In situations such as this, storm sewers cannot possibly deal with all of the water, and it floods local businesses. When he got to work the morning of the storm, the main floor had several inches of water covering the office floors, and all of the electrical connections had shorted out.

The client quickly called SERVPRO for help with his commercial office and the flood damage in Olean. The water receded quickly from the parking lot. However, there was still a great deal of water in the office. Many of his computers sitting on the floor were also damaged. We responded within the hour and after assessing the situation to make sure it was safe to enter, began removing equipment and desks to facilitate the water removal and drying process.

The carpet and underpad were placed directly on a cement pad. Potentially contaminated water flooded the carpet and underpad from the parking lot and storm sewers. We removed the carpet and underpad. The sheetrock on the walls absorbed moisture up to approximately fifteen inches from the floor. The sheetrock was cut away up to twenty-four inches to remove all potentially moisture-damaged material. The cement floor and walls were decontaminated and dried in preparation for new underpad and carpeting

SERVPRO also uses air movers to force air into challenging to get to areas. The high-speed air currents generated by the air movers pick up the remaining moisture drying the floor and walls quickly. The computers and other electronic equipment were referred to a third party by the client for repair.

New carpeting and underpad were installed along with repairs to the sheetrock on the walls. All of the desks, chairs and associated furniture were hand washed and dried. SERVPRO technicians returned the furniture to their designated spots.

What is the Best Way to Restore Flood Damaged Property in Olean?

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

Our tecnhicians are always on standby to take your call.

Commercial Flood Damage Restoration For Olean Businesses

With its location on I-86, Olean is a great layover spot for tourism and transportation. Area businesses support families on extended vacations to the nearby Allegany Forest and Lake Erie or truck drivers on an overnight stop.

While the swelling lake doesn’t reach this far, extreme thunderstorms can still cause commercial flood damage in Olean motels. To repair or replace damaged property, SERVPRO response teams train to quickly remove water, dispose of non-restorable items, dry the structure, and restore property not severely damaged.

Teams start by spraying the floodwater and nearby surfaces with an anti-bacterial agent to neutralize any contaminants. Then, they use pumps or smaller extraction devices to remove the water. Since the water contains solid particulates, WRTs (Water Damage Restoration Technicians) send the water directly into the nearest sewer access point.

Water softens the glue as it soaks the carpets in the rooms and office areas. While this is a problem to solve if the water was clean, contaminated water means that SERVPRO cannot guarantee the safety of the carpet. Here, the softened glue makes it easier and faster to remove the carpets for disposal. After finishing with the carpets, the WRTs scrape the glue off the bare floors and clean them again with an anti-bacterial detergent.

Simultaneously, other technicians remove all furniture from the flooded rooms and raise it off the ground.  They then clean and examine the furniture for damage, either on-site or at our facility. If wood items have a finish or veneer, WRTs set up a combination of air movers and fans to carefully dry and harden them again. If needed, team members also set up a dehumidifier to draw moisture out of the items to speed up the process.

With the furniture out, other team members examine the drywall panels. If they have absorbed enough water to being crumbling, then the team remove and dispose of them immediately. For panels that only absorbed a small amount of water, WRTs use more air movers and fans to dry them in place carefully.

For SERVPRO of Jamestown / Olean, supporting our area businesses means supporting the entire community. We are here for every commercial facility locally and in Falconer, Frewsburg, and Lakewood. If your business has had a flood or other water intrusion, call (716) 338-4901 today to begin restoration. We are here to help you.

Fortunately, your local fire restoration service can offer a number of solutions. From dry-cleaning for cloth items, to smoke odor removal, here are a few of the restoration techniques that your fire cleanup crew may use.

1. Options for Smoke Odor Removal

In many cases, it may be necessary to remove smoke odors from the property after a fire. Many professionals utilize an ozone machine for this process when cleaning the room itself. Items inside this area may be removed, cleaned, and placed in content storage until the damage to the building has been repaired.

2. Options for Cloth Items

For cloth items such as curtains, rugs, or clothing that may have been in the building at the time of the fire, dry-cleaning can be one possible solution for removing smoke damage. Other items may be washable in a cleaning solution.

3. Options for Solid Items

When it comes to content cleaning, it may be desirable to also wash items of a solid nature. These could be furniture pieces, electronics, or even office supplies. Prevent a Disaster With Proper Fire Sprinkler Maintenance

12/31/2018 (Permalink)

Fire sprinkler maintenance is an easy thing to forget when most businesses will never experience a fire. Fire sprinklers on your Lakewood,NY, property need to be checked regularly in order to prevent a disaster. When sprinklers fail to turn on, the fire damage can be devastating. Follow these simple steps to ensure your sprinklers work well.

1. Make Sure the Water Is Turned On

It may seem obvious, but missing this step can be devastating. Confirm the water valves leading to your sprinklers are turned on. This step needs to be performed after all maintenance jobs involving water valves.

2. Do Not Paint Over the Sprinklers

Perhaps it is tempting to paint over fire sprinklers to help them blend into the décor. However, it is important to remember they are functional, not decorative. Paint can block water flow, thus preventing them from fulfilling their purpose.

3. Do Not Block the Sprinklers

Make sure you do not block sprinklers, especially when utilizing precious storage space. Sprinklers cannot do their job well if they are obstructed.

4. Check for Corrosion or Build-up

This sprinkler maintenance step is similar to not painting over the sprinkler system. Make sure to periodically check for corrosion or buildup so the sprinklers can work optimally.

5. Make Sure the Sprinkler Pipes Don’t Freeze

Saving money by turning the heat down in an empty building may seem like a practical choice. The problem is that wet pipes can freeze in cold temperatures, preventing the sprinklers from functioning properly. Keep your building warm enough to prevent freezing pipes.

6. Do Not Hang Things From Sprinklers

While it is tempting to hang items from sprinklers, remember that sprinklers are not meant to hold any kind of weight. Hanging things from sprinklers can cause them to bend or break, and a broken sprinkler is no help if there is a fire.

Keeping up with your fire sprinkler maintenance is just as important as fire prevention. Even with proper maintenance, accidents can still happen. When they do, your emergency restoration services partner can help get you back to work again.

3 Situations That Call for Flood Coverage

10/18/2018 (Permalink)

Ceiling damage from a roof leak in Olean,NY

Flooding can cause a great deal of damage to your commercial property, and your property insurance often doesn't cover it. If your building is in an area that is prone to flooding, you are required by law to have flood insurance, but it's a good idea even if it's not technically required where your business is located. You may think of a flood policy for your business in Olean,NY, as an extraneous expense, but if a situation arises where you need it, you'll be glad you purchased it.

Heavy Storms

When heavy storms strike, dropping a deluge more quickly than the area can handle, you may need a policy to pay for flood mitigation services. The property insurance in your commercial insurance package probably covers minor damage caused by a relatively small leak, such as:

  • Wet insulation in the attic
  • Water damage in walls from rain
  • Ceiling replacement from a roof leak

If the storm persists and causes floodwaters that seep into your building and cause major damage, your flood insurance typically covers those repairs.

Overflowing Bodies of Water

If your business is near a lake, stream or river, prolonged rains can cause a flood, and this can affect your property. If the overflow reaches your building, there's probably not going to be any way to stop if from breeching your lower floors and causing quite a bit of damage to your building's structure. A flood policy can cover the repairs needed to restore your building.

Dam Breaks

If a levee or dam breaks, the area around it will probably not be able to avoid flooding. This type of flood can be especially devastating because the water may just keep coming until the hole is repaired. If you live in an area that would be affected by such a catastrophe, flood coverage is generally a must.

No matter where your commercial property is located, it's a good idea to have flood insurance. It offers protection beyond what your property insurance covers, and it can be the fastest way to get your building repaired after a flood.

4 Reasons To Replace Polybutylene Pipes

10/1/2018 (Permalink)

blue pipe damaged Poly pipe damage in Lakewood, NY

Polybutylene was a common pipe material from the 1970s through the mid-1990s. Poly pipes were preferred due to their affordability and ease of installation. Over time, however, antibacterial treatments such as chlorine and other oxidants cause this material to break down. Here are four reasons to replace poly pipes with polyvinyl chloride or chlorinated polyvinyl chloride.

  1. Most building codes forbid the installation of poly pipes. If you own commercial property in North America, there is a good chance that building codes in your region bar the installation of poly pipes. Choose another material such as PVC or CPVC to make sure the plumbing in your building is up to code.
  2. Poly pipes cannot be repaired. The Quest fittings designed for polybutylene pipes are no longer manufactured, as this pipe material is not considered safe. You may be able to use push fit or transition fittings for copper, CPVC, or PEX pipes with the same outside diameter, but you will not be able to repair poly pipes with the connectors designed for use with this piping material.
  3. Water treatment chemicals degrade poly pipes. Chlorine and other antibacterial treatments may wear down poly pipes over time. This can cause chemicals to leach out of the pipes into the water supply to your building and may also lead to more frequent leaks.
  4. Poly pipes may introduce chemicals into water. As suggested above, oxidants are known to make this material brittle. As these pipes crack or flake and become vulnerable at fittings, this may expose occupants of your building to chemicals.

It is a good idea to replace polybutylene pipes in your commercial property with new plumbing materials to prevent breaks, contamination, degrading, and leaks. If your property in Lakewood,NY sustains damage due to a pipe burst, leak, or from any other source, contact commercial water damage restoration specialists.

Getting Rid of Mold Expediently

7/16/2018 (Permalink)

Mold damage in Jamestown, New York

As a busy property manager, it is never good to find an outbreak of mold in one of your Jamestown, NY, buildings. You may be wondering how it got there, what you should do about it, and how long the mold removal will take. But what do you know about mold? Before you begin the removal process, here are a few things you should understand.

Mold Is All Around Us

Mold is everywhere. The goal of a remediation company is not to eliminate it but to bring its numbers down to healthy levels.

• Mold is found naturally in all environments.
• Mold is a type of fungus with thousands or more species.
• Not all mold is “black mold” or toxic mold.
• Areas of high humidity and dampness encourage mold growth.

Determine the Extent of the Problem

If you discover mold, you should determine how it got there. Here are some things to consider:

• Take note of where you find the mold.
• Look for roof leaks or other sources of water damage.
• Don’t attempt to clean it up yourself.
• Have it professionally tested.
• Contact a licensed mold removal company.

What a Professional Mold Remediation Specialist Can Do

Once you have called in a professional company, its technicians should examine the size and scope of the mold contamination. Then affected areas should be identified and treated using specialized products and equipment. The time it takes for mold remediation will depend on the amount that needs removal. In general, the remediation process will take three to seven days based on how much there is to eradicate. What you should get when you hire a company that specializes in mold removal in Jamestown, NY, are trained technicians who have the proper equipment for the job, who have extensive experience with the problem at hand, and who are up to date on the latest EPA guidelines.

If you have black mold or other fungi in your commercial building, call in the experts to remove it. Getting the job done in the most expedient manner should be the highest priority for both you and the professionals you hire.

But, what happens when the device malfunctions and causes water damage instead? When the sprayers accidentally cause flooding in your building, you are left wondering what to do next. 1. Disconnect the Water Supply

As soon as possible, turn off the water supply to the building. The earlier the fire sprinklers stop spraying water, the faster the damage is contained. Remember, your safety is most important. If there is danger of electricity coming into contact with water, first turn off the main electricity to the building or wait until the specialists arrive.

2. Call a Water Restoration Company

After water damage occurs, it is essential to immediately contact a water restoration specialist. When the experts arrive, they assess the damage and make a plan for drying and restoring the space. Since the water came from a clean source, you do not need to worry about contamination if you act quickly.

3. Contact Your Insurance Agent

Most often, commercial property insurance covers loss and restoration from flooding. Have your insurance papers and contact information in an easily accessible place that is not susceptible to water.

4. Mitigate the Damage Until Help Arrives

While you are waiting for the specialists, increase ventilation in the building. Open windows to allow fresh air to flow freely through the space, or use air conditioning in the summer. If your building is more than one story, dry the top level first to prevent water leaks through the ceiling to the floor below. Mop and blot excess water from floors and furniture. Remove art and other valuable items to a dry location.

Fire sprinklers are the perfect way to avoid fire and smoke damage at your business in Jamestown, NY. However, a device glitch can leave you with flooding and water damage instead. Follow the above tips to quickly return your business to its preloss state.

Recovering From Smoke Damage From a Nearby Fire

Help from SERVPRO after a fire nearby to remove your smoke damage

Damage from a fire to a commercial property lingers long after the fire has been extinguished. The destruction can even extend to adjacent properties that were not engulfed in flames. Although the property may not have water damage from the fire fighter’s hoses, drifting ash, smoke, and soot can wreak havoc and bring your business to a grinding halt. Luckily, smoke damage is often a covered loss. Recovering a commercial building from a nearby fire can be done quickly and safely with help from restoration specialists, who use special techniques to repair the damage left behind.

Determine What Items Are Likely To Be Damaged

Certain objects are susceptible to smoke and soot damage, including the following:

• Carpeting
• Walls
• Upholstery

The longer these objects are left uncleaned, the more likely they are to develop lingering odors of smoke. Your items may also need to undergo a sanitization process to become safe to use again.

Move Quickly To Get It Fixed

After a fire in Jamestown, NY, it is important to work quickly to repair damage. Getting a professional inspection of the smoke damage is often crucial to determine the correct treatment needed. Once an inspection has taken place, restoration specialists can formulate a plan to bring the property back to normal, using these tools such as industrial air scrubbers, fogging equipment, and ozone treatments, all of which are designed to give a deep smoke cleaning to the building.

Get Back to Business as Usual

Once your commercial building has been properly cleaned of smoke and sanitized, it is also important to restore the building to how it was before the fire. Services often include the following:

• Carpet reinstallation
• Drywall repairs
• Repainting walls

Smoke damage can be frustrating, but it doesn’t have to last forever. Working with the right company after a fire can ease the burden of getting your business back on track.

Have a Plan in Case of a Fire

2/14/2018 (Permalink)

If a disaster strikes, you want to be ready for it with a contingency plan. A fire or flood, as well as many other possible disasters, could put you out of business. Ensure that your company is able to bounce back and resume operations in as short a time as possible.

Risks

There are many misfortunes your business might have to confront. Although you cannot plan for everything, here are some possible mishaps that you should plan for.

• Fire
• Flood
• Earthquake
• Hard drive failure
• Data theft
• Theft

Creating a Plan

The above risks are a sample of what your business might face. It is up to you to determine what risks are applicable to your particular industry and region of the world. This will give your contingency plan focus. Although you want to be prepared, you don’t want to waste time and money on things that are unlikely to happen.

Prepare an evacuation plan. Post it throughout the office. Your staff needs to know where to go, what routes to use to exit the building and when to make that call. Appoint department heads to ensure everyone is able to get out safely.

There needs to be a communication system in place. The contingency plan should detail the communication fan-out system. Who contacts whom? Update all email and phone numbers. Make sure contact lists are printed in case of a technology failure.

Update your on-site emergency kits and train your staff on them. If your business stores valuable data, take measures to protect it. Review your insurance policy and make sure it covers the disasters you find important.

Your contingency plan should lay out what is necessary to run your business at the base level. These are the absolute essentials for operating again. Make plans so that those resources are available as quickly as possible. Research alternate suppliers.

It is important to have a plan in case of an emergency. In the heat of things, it can be hard to make good decisions. A plan gives you something to rely on. You can even hire professionals in Lakewood, New York, to help you devise one.

Category 1 Water Does Not Mean Category 1 Water Damage

1/10/2018 (Permalink)

Any broken pipe or supply line in commercial buildings in Olean, NY can lead to severe water damage. Experts in commercial restoration know that no two water damages are alike; a lot depends on the category of water involved. If you’re dealing with water damage due to category 1 water, you are exposed to sanitary water. Clean water does not pose substantial risk. What is category 1 water exactly, and what damage can it cause?

1. What Is Category 1 Water?

Category 1 water starts from a sanitary source. Examples for sanitary sources are faucets, toilet tanks, and drinking fountains.  Nevertheless, be advised that this water can turn into unsanitary water based on time and temperature. Just because it’s category 1 water doesn’t mean that it cannot cause extensive damage. Clean water can cause four types of water damage.

2. What Are the Main Types of Water Damage?

Class 1 is the easiest to deal with as only small amounts of water are involved. Absorption and evaporation are minimal issues. The damage is limited to one room or one specific area. Carpet is only slightly or not affected at all, and only materials with low porosity have absorbed water.

Class 2 damage is characterized by larger amounts of water and a higher evaporation rate. At least all the carpet in a room is affected and walls are soaked in water up to 24 inches. The structure and substructure have absorbed moisture.

Class 3 water damage means that enough water has filled the area to be evaporated into or absorbed by everything in the room. It’s not uncommon that the water comes from overhead. Walls, insulation, ceilings, carpets, and sub-floors are saturated.

Specialty drying situations fall into class 4. Enough time has passed for water to affect materials with low porosity, including brick and concrete.

Clean water might be sanitary but it can be responsible for extensive damage. As soon as you notice a broken pipe or supply line, it’s important to take action. Visit http://www.SERVPROjamestownolean.com for more information on commercial water damage.

Four Reasons to Pay for Professional Commercial Fire Restoration

Four Reasons to Pay for Professional Commercial Fire Restoration

Unless you experienced a fire in the past, you probably have no idea of the effects that it can have on your building. The flames caused by an electrical fire or a utility room fire can climb higher and higher before spreading throughout the entire building. Even if the fire truck gets there in time for a firefighter to save the building and use a fire hose to protect other buildings from catching on fire, you'll still find yourself dealing with quite a bit of cleanup. Fire damage companies that specialize in commercial fire damage offer all the help needed to get your building back up and running again. If you think that you can handle the work yourself, check out the top four reasons to pay for fire restoration help.

Your Fire Sprinkler System and Water Damage

A good fire sprinkler system will have alarms that monitor various areas of the building for temperature changes that occur during a fire. As soon as it detects a temperature change, it will turn itself on and use water to take down the flames. That water can flow for hours until help arrives, which will leave you dealing with a significant amount of standing water as well as some flooded rooms. If you used fire suppression tools, you can hire fire restoration professionals to clean up the water damage and the suppression materials left behind.

Fire Truck Damage

When you see a fire truck or a firefighter outside of your building while it's on fire, you might thank your lucky stars that help arrived in the nick of time. Once that fire truck leaves though, you need to take a look at the damage that the fire hose and firefighters caused. A firefighter might use an ax to break down a door or smash through a window and use fire suppression materials to blanket a smaller fire. Hiring a commercial fire damage company to come out to your building for an inspection lets you know what they can do to remove those materials and clean up the debris and water left behind by fire suppression methods and a fire hose.

Safe Smoke Damage Removal

Whether you use your building as an office, a retail shop or anything in between, fire damage companies can help with the smoke damage cleanup and removal after an electrical fire. Event the smallest of fires can cause more damage than you could cleanup on your own with weeks of hard work. The smoke damage can leave behind a thick odor that makes you feel claustrophobic and wreaks havoc on your breathing. Commercial fire damage companies send their cleanup techs out with masks and other gear to help them stay safe while cleaning up your fire damage and soot damage.

Sooth Damage Cleaning Too

If you still aren't sure you should call for help after a utility room fire, think about how quickly and efficiently they can clean the soot damage caused by those flames. This type of fire damage includes more than just the thick build of soot that you see on your walls or on the floor. Soot damage can go so deep into the floors and walls that ever after cleaning your business, you still smell an intense smoky odor. It can mix with fire suppression methods and become even worse, and the soot can also spread because of the water produced by your fire sprinkler system.

Ask any firefighter what you should do after experiencing commercial fire damage, and you'll hear back that you should get some professional help. Soot damage and smoke damage are just some of the problems that you face after an electrical fire. A small utility room fire can set off a fire sprinkler system that puts out the flames but causes water damage, which worsens when combined with the water produced by a fire hose. The best fire restoration company can reset your fire sprinkler system and provide assistance after any type of fire, including a utility room fire or an electrical fire.
